El puerto y el aprovechamiento ganadero son mucho m\u00e1s antiguos, y est\u00e1n asociados a los itinerarios de la gente vediniense, pueblo prerromano atestiguado por numerosas l\u00e1pidas funerarias halladas en las cuencas del Sella, del Ponga y del Esla.<\/p>\n

Nicanor Pi\u00f1ole (Gij\u00f3n, 1878-1978) ya hab\u00eda comenzado a interesarse por los paisajes y culturas de monta\u00f1a desde temprano, pero fue su amistad con el monta\u00f1ero y fot\u00f3grafo Jos\u00e9 Ram\u00f3n Lueje la que lo condujo a una observaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s detallada de la vertiente oriental de la cordillera. Desde Lario y Valde\u00f3n hasta Los Beyos o Ventaniella, pueblos y gentes aparecieron en sus lienzos con una calidad perceptiva similar a la de las im\u00e1genes de Lueje.
